Dental bridges are remarkable restorative devices that allow patients to replace one or several sequential missing teeth. While these appliances are strong and durable, they are not indestructible and can fall out due to age, infection, or injury. Here’s a brief overview of a few common causes of dental bridge failure and how to get the care you need in a timely manner.
What Is a Dental Bridge?
A traditional dental bridge is one or more artificial teeth strung between two dental crowns placed on the healthy teeth on either side of the gap created by tooth loss. These devices can be an incredibly practical way to address the loss of multiple teeth, and they can restore much of a patient’s chewing power and make it easier to speak clearly. They can also help a patient achieve the confidence they need to smile proudly at work and at social events.
Why Do Dental Bridges Fail?
Dental bridges can fail for a variety of reasons such as:
- Age: Dental bridges are not permanent and can fall out due to wear and tear or the erosion of the cement anchoring them to the healthy teeth.
- Infection: Tooth decay beneath the dental crowns supporting the bridge can compromise the bond holding the device in place, causing it to fall out.
- Injury: Blunt force trauma due to blows or falls can break a dental bridge or cause it to come loose from the teeth supporting it.
What Should I Do When My Bridge Falls Out?
If your bridge falls out, stick to the following guidelines:
- Locate the bridge and place it in a clean container for transport to your dentist’s office.
- Call your dentist to schedule an emergency appointment.
- Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to clear away debris.
- Take care to chew away from the area of the mouth that supported the dental bridge.
- Be gentle when brushing the teeth that supported the device.
- Use over-the-counter pain relievers or a cold compress if necessary.
When you arrive at your dentist’s office, they will evaluate your mouth and appliance to determine if the bridge can be fixed or replaced. However, this may be an excellent opportunity to discuss upgrading to an implant bridge that provides superior stability and chewing power.
